Argyll and Bute
Argyll District has 10 groups spread over most of Argyll – one of the biggest areas of land in Scouting!
In fact, the geography of Argyll District is such that it takes over three hours to drive from one end to the other. That kind of distance and time puts severe pressure on ensuring that leaders across the District have ready access to District officials. With that in mind, the District Team has been set up to ensure communication, access and support at all times.
The District Commissioner role is shared by Beth Aitken, who is based in the South of the District, and a District Commissioner post in the North (currently vacant). They are supported by two Deputy District Commissioners; two in the south and one in the mid-Argyll area. whilst the DESC is based out of the North. This means that there is always someone local in the Leadership team to support the Group Scout Leaders and sections.
There are 11 groups in Argyll and three Explorer units. The groups are in Islay, Mull, Tiree, Oban, North Connell, Lochgilphead, Dunoon, Sandbank, West Cowal, Campbeltown, and Southend. The District has an ambitious growth plan and is actively seeking both to grow existing groups and develop new ones.
Leader training and development is a priority as is offering a wide and varied programme to our young people. The District has a policy of facilitating and encouraging young people to experience all that Scouting has to offer locally, nationally, and internationally.
